Xiaomi’s Flagship for 2017, Xiaomi Mi 6 Specs and Overview

Xiaomi recently unveiled their Flagship smartphone Xiaomi Mi 6. Xiaomi highlighted their key new features at the event, features like Snapdragon 835 chipset, 6 GB of RAM, dual rear Camera and a stunning 3D glass design.

With keeping the recent smartphones from Xiaomi in mind, I can say that they are going all out about design. As I wrote a review over Xiaomi Mi Mix before, you can tell that for sure. Now, Xiaomi Mi 6 is standing as the flagship smartphone of Xiaomi for 2017. So, you can tell that for this one too, that Xiaomi gone all out for this design.

First of all ,lets talk about what they include with the Xiaomi Mi 6. There are Travel Adapter, ejector Pin, a TPU case for the phone and a USB Type-c cable. Did I mentioned that, the Xiaomi Mi 6 is missing a 3.5 mm Headphone Jack. So, you will be missing jack in this one, but they are giving the USB type-c to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack converter.

Design and Placements

So, on the bottom of this phone, you won’t find 3.5 mm Headphone jack, but you will find USB Type-c port, primary microphone and bottom firing speaker. The power button and the volume rockers are located to the right, the secondary noise cancelling microphone and an IR blaster can be found up top.

Moving toward the left side of the phone, There is a tray, which contain two SIM cards and as always there is no support for microSD card. At the front side of the phone there a selfie camera at the top of 8 MP, earpiece and notification LED.

Full HD Display & Fingerprint scanner

Now, that is followed by a 5.15 inch IPS LCD display with a HD resolution meaning a pixel density of about 425 pixels per inch. This display is supposed to cover 94.4% of the NTSC color, gamut and get as bright as 600 nits. It is covered by 2.5D glass. Then it has backlit dots for capacitive keys and another capacitive home key at the center.

This is not a physical key but has a fingerprint scanner built and kind of like with the OnePlus 3T or Xiaomi’s own Mi 5s. Initial impressions, this fingerprint scanner feels fast and responsive.

3D Glass design

To the back we have 3D glass, the Mi logo can be found at the bottom. Note that the 3D glass curves to all four sides and on top we have the biggest change to 12 MP cameras with the dual tone dual LED flash.

Talking about some major change is the fact that Xiaomi Mi 6 now has a splash resistance. Xiaomi haven’t mentioned any IP ratings here, but for what it is worth to Xiaomi Mi 6 can handle a few splashes. This also means though the Xiaomi Mi 6 support the same size display as its predecessor.

Dimensions

It is a tad taller, wider and thicker than its predecessor. It is also considerable heavier 168 grams, that is almost 40 grams heavier than the Xiomi Mi 5. That said in an age of 5.8 and 6.2 inch displays the Xiaomi Mi 6 still manages to remain quite compact and usable single handed.

RAM, Processor, Storage and Battery

Let’s now take a quick look at what is on the inside the Xiaomi Mi 6, so as I mentioned earlier, the Xiaomi Mi 6 has a latest 64 bit octa core Snapdragon 835 chipset, we have the Adreno 540 GPU and 6 GB of RAM on the board. This phone is available with either 64 GB or 128 GB of internal storage.

Xiaomi Mi 6 comes with larger 3350 mAh battery and Quick Charge 3.0, now this battery along with the 10nm 835 coupled as a fact that the display is relatively small at 5.15 inch should make for great battery life. I will tell a lot more on it, in the full review. But for now, this is all I can say about battery.

Software: MIUI 8.0 with Android Nougat v7.0

Now as far as software is concerned, we have got MIUI 8.0, on the top of Android Nougat v7.0. There is quite a bit of bloat, but Xiaomi makes it easy to uninstall. By the way, sadly though this is Android Nougat, but the regular Nougat features like dual window, one quick switch are not present on my device as this device was imported from China.

But you will get those on the regular one, on which I will write a review when it will be available for India. That’s it, Lets now get to the part that everyone is been waiting for the camera.

Dual Cameras and Camera App

The camera application itself is not all that diffrent from other models we have seen. A lot of same features that we are used to. The manual mode is where you can find a change, you get to choose between wide angle and telephoto options to shoot. So, let me explain there are two cameras on the back.

Both of them are 12 MP, one has 4 axis optical image stabilization, 1.25µm size pixels with an aperture of f/1.8. That is the wide angle camera, the telephoto one has 1µm size pixels with an aperture of f/2.6 and no image stabilization.

So, with that let us talk about the price. That is another very important part of any phone review. Xiaomi Mi 6 the 64 GB variant is priced at 25K INR or $360 USD and the 128 GB variant is priced at 29K INR or $420 USD. It is also worth noting that Xiaomi is even offering a ceramic variant that comes with 16K Gold Camera range just like Xiaomi Mi Mix. That one is at 30K INR or $435 USD.
