Xiaomi Redmi 4: Smartphone with Record Breaking Sales

Xiaomi Redmi 4, In online sale across their official website and Amazon, they sold over 250K+ units within mere 8 minutes. The rush for buying this smartphone was so heavy, that even Amazon’s website was on the verge of breaking down. Actually it did end up crushing the server for few minutes.

So, whats that great in this smartphone? The Xiaomi Redmi 4, released at the start of this month, but it created history with sales. Of course it is not a smartphone like iPhone from apple, which is rare release, but this do end up creating history with online sales.

So, here is my review, about what’s so great about Xiaomi Redmi 4 and what are features and specifications of this beauty.

First of all starting with manufacturing, Chinese company manufactured this smartphone in India, it is available in three variant. First variant with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB Internal, second with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB Internal and the last third one with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB Internal. Their prices are 7K, 9K and 11K respectively in Indian currency.

Now, for starter do not confuse this model with their another model Redmi 4A. This is Xiaomi’s budget oriented device considering the price I already mentioned above. Think this one as a premium upgraded version of Redmi 4A.

Build Quality

An Important thing to notice about this device, is that the Navigation buttons on the bottom of the smartphone, are not backlit. Also Redmi 4 comes with 2.5D glass on the top of the display, so this is the thing Xiaomi improved, because until now, we were only seeing the 2.5D glass in their Mi mid range smartphones.

Xiaomi Redmi 4 comes with the metal back unlike the Redmi 4A which was lased with plastic back. This one also has the fingerprint scanner on the back side of the phone which was lacking in Redmi 4A.

In terms of build quality , Xiaomi has upped the build quality for their budget lineup of smartphones, So in the end we do get a premium design and build quality for a smartphone with budget this much lower. So, Great job Xiaomi.

Battery: Long Battery Life, but not Quick Charge

Moving on to the Battery section, the Xiaomi Redmi 4 comes with 4100 mAh battery, but considering the fact that this smartphone is not coming with either USB Type C or Fast charging support, but the charger will be a 5V and 2Amp charger.

So, your battery will last long, but it will take long for charging too. But on the other hand when you look at the price, it is good.

Xiaomi Redmi 4 also includes the 3.5mm Headphone jack and IR blaster placed on the top of the phone. So, it is a good thing that means you can control remote devices like televisions and all with this one. We also get a secondary noise cancellation microphone.

Volume rocker and the Power button is placed on the right side of the phone and at the bottom of the phone, there are two grills, which means one of them is bottom firing speaker which being common nowadays in any smartphones, and in another it is microphone. It also has the microUSB slot at the bottom.

Hybrid SIM Slot

In the left side of the phone, you will get the SIM slot, actually the SIM tray is a standard dual SIM tray, which means it has Hybrid SIM slot. So, either you can use Secondary SIM or you can use microSD card. In short, you will be getting one Micro SIM and second Nano SIM slot which also serves as the microSD card slot for expanding storage.

Considering the specifications, it comes with Snapdragon 435 chipset, which is pretty average processor, but again when I look at the price of this phone, it is good. Besides the Snapdragon 435 chipset, there will be octa-core processor clocked at 1.4 GHz, it also has the Adreno 505 GPU.

The display is going to be of 5 inch IPS LCD screen, with the resolution of 720 x 1280 pixel. The pixel density is going to be at 294 pixels per inch, which is not bad for smartphone with this price. Regarding Internal Storage and RAM, then I mentioned all three variant of Xiaomi Redmi 4 above.

Camera: Not great, but better than other Redmi

Moving towards the most important part of the smartphone review, Camera. Xiaomi Redmi 4 comes with 13 MP primary camera on the back with an aperture of f/2.0 and 5 MP selfie camera with an aperture of f/2.2.

Camera is the department in which I think, Xiaomi is pretty weak. Camera application on the Redmi 4 is typical MIUI’s Camera app.

Than, for primary rear camera, you get Auto focus and Tap to focus, so even if you don’t tap before talking photo it will be focused. But, if you do tap than it quickly adjust the exposure and just rotate the focus point to adjust exposure as of your liking.

In outdoor conditions, the camera of the Xiaomi Redmi 4 is doing a very good job in terms of color accuracy, but again when we move to indoor lighting conditions, the camera exhibits slight weakness. You have to be careful because it does not have any optical image stabilization.

But the good thing about the camera is that if you compare it with other Redmi smartphones which came before this one, the camera performance is surprisingly a lot better. I fell flash on this device is pretty powerful.

But as I mentioned in indoor lighting conditions you have to be careful as it does not have any optical image stabilization. And when you use the tap focus, certain parts of the image can get overexposed, so you have to be careful regarding the same.

Software: MIUI 8, but not with Android Nougat

Coming to the Software, it runs on, is Android Marshmallow v6.0, which is a little bit older if you really care about being with latest. But it also runs with MIUI 8, So, if you are familiar with Xiaomi Devices this won’t be different for you.

So, you will be missing Android Nougat in this model, but it could be possible to get an update from Xiaomi. Which is not announced yet. There is Mi Remote included in the pre-loaded applications in the Xiaomi Redmi 4, which is to control remote devices using the IR blaster, I mentioned before.

Sensors: Quick Fingerprint, Lacks NFC

Talking about the fingerprint sensor, it is quiet the faster one, it do unlock fast, but can’t say the fastest one I have seen. But it is one of the fastest with this low price. Speaking of the sensors, there are all sensors, you need, like FM Radio, compass, Gyro but lacks NFC.

In the end, I personally feel that Xiaomi has done a good job, considering the budget oriented smartphone. The build quality is certainly a big leap up compared to other budget oriented smartphones by Xiaomi.

The only problem in this device is camera quality, but as you can read it above, it is way much better than other Redmi phones. So, regarding the Xiaomi smartphones this is quite the good deal.

This is not the thing to announce that, this device has already made it up to the mark. So, if you are looking for smartphone with cool specifications but at the lower  price like this, you can not get anything better than this. But if your budget is not this much limited, and you consider camera above all the things, you can forget this one.

So, what do you think about the Xiaomi Redmi 4? Is this worth to buy according to you? Tell me your answers with reasons which you consider worth buying or not to, in comment section.
