What is Proximity sensor? What are alternate uses of it?

A proximity sensor is a sensor able to detect the presence of nearby objects without any physical contact. Almost all of touch screen smartphone contain proximity sensor.

In most of the phone we don’t use it for anything else but powering off screen while we are talking on the phone. There is more to it.



You can use proximity sensor for many things. Let’s check those features you can use with proximity sensor.

You can use your media playback with proximity sensor. With the application called Wave control. If you like to control with gestures then this is your thing for sure.

You can control your media playback by waving your hand only. You can set any music player you have as a default media player in this application, and then you can use wave controls built in to the app, to control your media playback.

You can hover your hand over proximity sensor to play and pause your media play and you can go forward by waving hand once and backward by waving hand twice and there is more to it.

This application is available for free to use but there are ads in this application which you can remove with in-app purchase.

2. Answer calls by raising phone to your ear

This feature is comes built in with some of new smartphone, but if your phone doesn’t have it, then don’t worry. We got your back.



Speaker phone Ex named application which is available in Google play store is an app that will provide you this feature. This app will automatically answer your call just by raising your phone to ear.

This feature with application simplify the process of answering calls, although it wasn’t much of complex before anyway. This application also support feature to disable auto answering by silencing the call.

This application has other tons of feature but unfortunately those are not available in free version. So, you have to purchase Pro version of this application to unlock all the features.

As free version include the basic functionality you don’t have to purchase pro version, unless you really want all those features of pro version.

3. Lock and unlock screen automatically

We all have been in the situation, when our device’s power button stopped working or button is broken. In that time we need to get virtual lock screen application, which lock our device.

What if you don’t need that application, and the application which will be replacing it, lock and unlock your screen automatically, based on it’s position. It will determine whether it is in hand or in pocket by using proximity sensor.

Well, there is an application for android named “Kin Screen“, which will do this exactly. This application will lock and unlock your screen, with respect to proximity sensor, that sensor is covered or not.

This application will lock your screen, if you cover proximity sensor of your device for more than 10 seconds and when you want to unlock it, just wave your hand over the proximity sensor, and this application will unlock your screen.

You can also adjust 10 second time out for locking the screen, but for that you need to purchase pro version of this application, which is available by in-app purchase.

But it’s not necessary to purchase for pro version, as you can adjust with 10 second time out. Just get it from play store for free and enjoy it.

4. Customize actions for gestures on the proximity sensor

If you want to set custom actions for gestures on the proximity sensor, rather than using this features, You can get it too. You can use Application called “Proximity actions.

This application will let you triggers customizable actions when you perform different gestures on the proximity sensor. You  can create gestures to lock – unlock screen, launch apps, and do a lot more.
