How to Prevent Access To USB Devices using GPO in windows server 2012?

GPO means group policy object. Whatever you set in GPO will apply to appropriate users and computers. In this post I will show how you can disable USB Drives using GPO in windows server 2012. In this era everyone owns USB mass storage devices. USB is as easy as plug and play. USB can get connected easily and windows can fetch its drivers easily too. USB devices are portable so we can use it on any computer.

HereI am showing you how To block USB Using GPO.

we are using windows server 2012 R2 operating system for server and windows 7 professional edition in client computers.

  1. Open Server Manager > Tools > Group Policy Management.
  2. On Group policy management tool windows, right click Group Policy Objects, click New. Provide a name to the GPO and click OK.

  3. NowRight click the policy which you just created and click Edit.This will open Group Policy Management Editor.

  4. You can apply GPO To Both Computers and Users
    To apply GPO TO Computer
    Navigate To Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > System > Removable Storage Access

    Navigate To User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > System > Removable Storage Access

    Now, There are lot of  settings for multiple Removable devices On Right Panel,

  5. On Right Panel Right click on the setting All Removable Storage classes: Deny all access  and click Edit.If you Enable this settings then it will block access to any removable storage class that you connect to the computer except mouse and keyboard.

  6. So far we have created a GPO (group policy object), the next step is to link the GPO to the Domain Controller or Organizational unit.To create OU, Right Click on domain. Select New Organizational Unit.

  7. To add user in OU, Open OU. Select Delegation Tab. Now you can add users from add button at bottom.

  8. Right Click On Domain Controller or OU. And select Link an Existing GPO. and Select Your GPO.

  9. Now Open Cmd(Command Prompt) On both server and Client And apply
    “Gpupdate /force” command.
  10. Restart Client computer. Insert USB storage Drive. Following error will appear when you try to open USB drive.
