HTC’s Flagship for 2017, HTC U11 Specs and Overview

After getting not so good response with HTC U Ultra, HTC has to make a great comeback. This is their chance. HTC U11 is HTC’s Flagship smartphone for 2017. As I wrote in my review over HTC U Ultra, that HTC U Ultra was not a great experience. For someone who has been waiting, since the release of HTC U10, That was quiet an disappointment.

But Now, everything is going to be fine, as HTC unwrapped their new Flagship for 2017, HTC U11. I can say for sure that HTC made a great comeback. Giving Review of an Android smartphone is actually more crucial than many people think. The more unique the phone is, the harder it is to judge it.

As much as finding accessories of phone concerns, HTC hasn’t been keeping out on that department. The HTC U11 comes with accessories like Quick Charge 3.0 Adapter, along with USB type C to USB type A converter cable.

It also has the company’s new USonic Headphones with USB type C connection to provide active noise cancellation and those who don’t want to use those and use their standard headphones, they also provide an adapter to use 3.5 mm Headphone jack too.

Now, that you know what includes in the box with HTC U11, let’s move toward the things that HTC U11 includes in itself. Well, if you were keeping tabs on HTC U11’s announcements, than you may be already know that the one of the  exciting part about the HTC U11 is their side squeeze functionality. But what about other features, lets see all of them.

Performance

Considering the specs, I can say that this one is ready to go toe to toe with all other flagship smartphones. So, eventually HTC will end up giving better fight to others. At least better than their HTC U Ultra.

HTC U11 comes with the Qualcomm’s one of the best and latest processor, Snapdragon 835. Considering the release time of HTC U11, you can say that, this would be the first flagship smartphone to be running on Snapdragon 835 worldwide.

It could have been the second smartphone running on Snapdragon 835, besides Samsung Galaxy S8, but that one is going to be running on Exynos in some of the markets, So, technically speaking, HTC U11 is first to be running on Snapdragon 835 throughout all the markets of the World.

The Snapdragon 835 is paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of Internal storage, while in some markets likely in Asia, a beefed-up version with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of Internal storage will be offered. In the US, HTC will sell the 4GB RAM variant only.

The HTC U11 is running on the 3000 mAh battery same as the HTC U Ultra, which is kinda smaller considering the fact that this one is going to be Flagship Smartphone for HTC, but if you consider that fact that this is going to support 5.5 Inch of display, This will do just fine, and Also this one is Water Resistance with the rating of IP67.

Let’s move on to the features HTC U11 provides.

Upgraded Sound

HTC U11 don’t have any big, stereo speakers, but HTC Says the BoomSound Hi-Fi edition speakers got an upgrade. It features an improved acoustic chamber, while the woofer has been redesigned to offer richer and louder sound. Like the HTC U Ultra, the HTC U11 lacks a 3.5 mm headphone jack, but the phone comes bundled with a pair of Usonic headphones as I said which connect through the USB Type-C port.

USonic headphone features active noise cancellation and the ability to fine tune the sound to your ear using Advanced sonar-like technology. If you prefer to use other headphones, which is totally upon you to ignore this beauty, you have the Type C to 3.5 mm adapter as I said.

The microphones are also updated now. Four mics work in concert to record sound from all directions, which is called Acoustic Focus, by HTC.

Camera with Highest Ratings

Camera is a very important part of any mobile review. The HTC U ultra’s camera wasn’t exactly best or worthy, but HTC promises that the HTC U11 is much better in this regards and it has some industry benchmarks to back its claims.

DxOMark, the respected camera testing outfit, gave the HTC U11 a socore of 90 for both still photography and video. That is the highest score ever in DxOMark’s rankings. It is one point higher than the Google Pixel, and Two points higher than the Samsung Galaxy S8, Sony Xperia X Performance, and HTC’s own 2016 flagship HTC 10.

The HTC U11 comes with a 12 MP BSI sensor with 1.4µm pixel size and Ultra speed autofocus. The camera features OIS, Auto HDR Boost and lens with an aperture of f/1.7, which bodes well for low light performance.

Talking about the front camera, It is bigger than the rear one, It goes up to 16MP, also comes with Auto HDR boost and a ton of selfie features like beauty mode and all.

Side Squeeze Function

As rumored, the HTC U11 incorporates pressure sensors in its sides. Dubbed Edge Sense, the feature gives you a sort of virtual button that you can configure to open any app you like.

Just Squeeze the sides of the HTC U11 to open up the app you configured, it could be anything, like Camera, messenger or Whatsapp. It do sounds convenient to me, but we will have to see what HTC did to prevent unintentional triggering, Which will judge the usefulness of this feature.

To add more customization options, the phone can even tell the difference between a normal squeeze, a short squeeze, and a squeeze and hold gesture, so you will be able to open multiple apps without touching the screen. We’re not convinced this feature is as “revolutionary” as HTC paints it to be, but it sure seems convenient.

Virtual Assistants

Well, the HTC U11 is going to be running on Android Nougat v7.1 and no fewer than three virtual assistants. HTC Sense Companion, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. The latter is only available in the United States United Kingdom and Germany. But its inclusion is nevertheless surprising.

Further more, in the Chinese version of the HTC U11 it will pack DuerOS, a digital assistant from Baidu. So, what can you do with all these assistants? There’s obviously a lot of overlap.

But according to HTC, Edge Companion will give you personalized recommendations, Google is great for getting answers and planning your day, while Alexa’s strong point is the ability to control various smart home devices. Speaking of that, the HTC U11 is the first phone to support wake word access to Alexa.

In real life, most users will probably end up ignoring and forgetting about some, if not all, AI features baked into the HTC U11. But nobody can blame HTC for not checking all the boxes.
