How to get back old version of WhatsApp Status on Android?

WhatsApp keep giving new updates regularly from quite sometime. The latest updates have brought features like video calling and two-step verification.

And another recently introduced update was with “Status” feature. Which is similar to Instagram stories, which in turn was a rip off of Snapchat stories.

Unlike previous version of Status updates which was based on text, this new version is quite annoying one. In this new updated version of so called “Status,” WhatsApp requires you to post photos, videos and GIFs, which get disappeared after 24 hours.

Some users of WhatsApp is not quite happy with this new updated “Status”, not only that they are showing their anger on other social media platforms with creating new memes over it.

Main reason behind their anger is that they can’t post stories same as they post on Instagram and Snapchat because of family contacts.

For ex.

Let’s put it aside and get back to topic. Main point is that if you didn’t liked this new updated “Status” Feature and by mistake you updated WhatsApp, then how to undo that mistake now.

So, if you are someone who would rather go back to writing emotional quotes or song lyrics as Status on WhatsApp, there are ways to get back that old WhatsApp status on Android smartphones.

Note: Following methods are working, as of now, we can not guarantee that they will work in the future as well.

How to get old WhatsApp Status back on Non rooted Android devices?

  • On non-rooted devices, you can just uninstall new WhatsApp.
  • Then Install older APK of WhatsApp to get the old status back
  • Among the several older WhatsApp versions, the version 2.17.60 worked for me.
  • You can download this version of WhatsApp from APKMirror
  • And just Install that version of WhatsApp on your phone.

Then, you can just set up your WhatsApp account, after which you should see the older WhatsApp home page with no Status tab in it.

While this method works for now, WhatsApp may choose to remove support for older WhatsApp versions soon. In that case, there’s a workaround that should work with most WhatsApp versions.

How to get old WhatsApp Status back on Rooted Android devices?

This workaround to get the old WhatsApp status back requires a rooted Android device. Also, it’s important to note that I tried this method on WhatsApp v2.17.77 and it worked out perfectly.

You can check out your WhatsApp version in

WhatsApp Settings -> About and help -> About.

If you have a different WhatsApp version, you can still try out the process but if it does not work out, you can download the version I’m using from APKMirror.

So, if you are ready to perform this on your rooted android device, then you will need a file manager app that includes support for root access. I’m using the ES File Explorer, but you can use any file manager of your choice which supports root access.

Now then you have the file manager installed, follow below steps to get back your old WhatsApp Status:

1. Go to Settings -> Apps -> WhatsApp and tap on “Force Stop“.

2. Then, Open ES File Explorer or whichever the file manager you are using. Enable “Root Explorer“. Which you can find in the left sidebar in ES File Explorer. The app may ask you to select the permissions for the Root Explorer for Read Only (RO) or Read Write (RW).

Select “RW” Read/Write for everything.

3. Once done, open up device files. In ES File Explorer, you can tap on “Local” in the sidebar and then, tap on “Device”. When the “Device” folder opens up,

Go to data->data->com.whatsapp->shared_prefs folder.

4. In the “shared_prefs” folder, tap on the “com.whatsapp_preferences.xml” file to open it up.

You’ll be asked to choose the editor to open the file. You can choose “ES Note Editor” or the text editor that comes with the file manager you are using.

When the file opens up, hit the three-dot menu button and tap on the “Edit” option.

5. In the “com.whatsapp_preferences.xml” file, you have to locate the text that says

“status mode” Value=”1″.

When you find it, you just have to Replace “1” to “0”. Do make sure to not edit anything else. Once done, save the XML file.

6. Once done, just open WhatsApp and the Status tab will be gone. You will find the Calls, Chats and Contacts tab, just like you want it. You will also find the the “Status” option in the menu and you can just tap on it and set the same old text status in WhatsApp.

Hence, Getting our old dear Text WhatsApp Status back is done. These are very simple methods to get it done.

Well, Every Positive has it Negative end So does this Old Status. You won’t be able to see status of other people on WhatsApp who are using new version of so called “Status” and nor they will get to see your text WhatsApp Status.

So, if thats ok with you, Try these methods and get the Old WhatsApp Status Back. If you face any problem performing these methods you can always ask it in comment box below.

To get more friends back with our dear Old Text Status, Share this blog with them. So, They can get Old WhatsApp status back too.
