How to disable Auto Update in Windows 10?

For some people, Auto update in Windows OS is very annoying. Especially, when you got a limited data connection. So, you have to turn Auto update off, it was quite easy option in Older versions of Windows OS, but now in Windows 10, it is not easy to find.

So, let’s first see, how you can turn Auto updates off, in Windows 7, then we will see how to do the same in Windows 10.

How to turn off Auto Update in Windows 7?

In Windows 7, you can turn off updates very simply, Just search “Windows update” in Start Menu, In there in the left panel of Opened Window, Choose “Change Settings” option.

In there, you can set how you would like to receive updates, I mean you can let windows look for updates and download it manually or prevent it to look for updates.

This is pretty easy to turn it off. but in windows 10, you won’t be seeing any option like this, to turn off those updates. So, how do you do that?

How to turn off updates in Windows 10?

In Windows 10, if you open Windows update settings, you will only find options to select that how you will get updates installed, which means Windows won’t allow you to change settings that how to download those updates.

Let’s see that how to do that.

Trick 1: Set Internet Connection as Metered.

You can set your Internet connection as Metered connection if you are using a Wi-Fi connection, which means every MB counts for you and with that your Windows won’t download updates automatically.

How to set My Internet Connection as Metered in Windows 10?

To set your Internet Connection as Metered Internet connection, to prevent auto updates and background data usage, follow the steps written below.

  1. Open Network settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced Option
  2. Scroll Down and Find Set as Metered Connection.
  3. Turn it on and There you go!!

Your currently connected Wi-Fi Network will be configured as Metered connection and it won’t download updates automatically.

Trick 2: Using Group Policy Editor

As I have mentioned before, Windows 10 doesn’t give you a visible option to disable Auto Updates, so you have to force your way through, to do it.

To do so, another trick is to use Group Policy Editor.

  1. Open Run and type “gpedit.msc” and press enter. It will open Group policy Editor.
  2. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > All Settings > Configure Automatic Updates
  3. Select Disabled in Opened Dialog Box, and Press OK.
  4. That’s it. This is all you need to do to disable Auto updates.

Although, I have shown you a way to to disable Auto updates in Windows 10, But it will be better to update your Windows OS, whenever you get time and Internet.

Updates on Windows OS is necessary, because they provide all the solutions of the bugs, as they find in OS. For Example, “Ransomware” As I mentioned in that Blog too, updates are the solution for those kind of bugs and malware.
